Automobile India Updates: Upcoming Mid-Size Sedans in India in 2022

The mid-size sedan segment in India always has been significantly popular. It offers the comfort and rideability of a sedan at almost hatchback prices while also being an easy handler in narrow Indian streets. With the recent uptick in creature comforts and technology offered in these segments, sedan automakers have started replacing their older mid-sized sedans with new and technologically updated offerings. Let us draw a clearer picture for you of what's in store for the future. Looking forward to an eventful year, these are some of the upcoming mid-sized sedans in India in 2022 that you should probably hold out for.

Skoda Slavia

Skoda's slated to come out with a new sedan expected to be launched in March 2022. The mid-sized Skoda Slavia aims to replace the previous Skoda Rapid. It is based on the same platform as the Skoda Kushaq. The Slavia is Skoda's second offering under the India 2.0 project. According to Skoda's claims, the Slavia will benefit from localization, leading to possibly quite a competitive pricing. Powering the Slavia will be a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder TSI engine. The engine will be capable of putting down 114PS of power and 175Nm of torque. It will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission with six-speed automatic transmission options available as well. The Slavia will also get a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TSI engine option producing 148PS and 250Nm of peak torque. Transmission options will include a six-speed manual and a seven-speed automatic DSG. The Skoda Slavia will be priced around the ₹10.49 - 17.59 lakhs (Ex-Showroom) mark.

Honda City Hybrid

The Honda City is one of the most popular mid-size sedans in India, having been around for generations with various updates and renditions. The upcoming hybrid version is set to launch in India in the middle of 2022. Based on its internationally available variant, the Honda City is powered by a 98hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine. This engine is mated to an integrated starter generator (ISG) and also gets an electric motor that puts down 109hp. The hybrid can be driven in pure EV mode, or with just the engine, or a combination of both. Dubbed the 'Sport Hybrid', Honda aims to offer the best in its class fuel economy, way above the 20kmpl mark, but with significant performance as well. The City may also get an RS variant with a sportier trim. The upcoming hybrid Honda City sedan is likely to come at a premium compared to the current Honda City, and may be priced above the ₹15 lakh (Ex-Showroom) mark.

Volkswagen Virtus

The Volkswagen Virtus aims to replace the now significantly ageing Volkswagen Vento in the Indian market. The new sedan shares its platform with the Volkswagen Taigun SUV and will feature a similar wheelbase as well. The Volkswagen Virtus's engine specifications are currently unknown. However, Volkswagen has confirmed that the sedan will get only petrol variants. This means that while the Vento's 110bhp 1.0-litre petrol plant could do duties in the Virtus, it could also get a high-performance variant with a 1.5-litre TSI engine previously seen in the Taigun, capable of 150bhp and 250Nm. Transmission options are bound to include a six-speed manual as well as automatic six-speed torque converter options, while the larger 1.5-litre unit will most likely get Taigun's DSG automatic gearbox only.

Verdict

While the popularity of the small SUV scene has seen a significant boom in recent years, leading to automotive manufacturers focusing on offering compelling packages in them, the saturation in that market seems to suggest that the sedan class is now slated for similar updates. With this shift, it is possible that this year, mid-sized sedans may take a large bite of the popularity cake.
