Compressed Natural Gas, popularly known as CNG, is one of the cleanest and cheapest fuels on the market. It has been a decade since CNG cars entered the Indian market. For reference, Maruti Suzuki was the first Indian carmaker to cater to CNG-oriented buyers by introducing the first factory-fitted Maruti Suzuki WagonR CNG in 2010. However, at the same time, oil prices have touched the sky, due to which the Indian four-wheeler market has witnessed a surge in demand for CNG cars. In India, CNG-powered vehicles are usually popular among taxi and fleet operators. But now, private buyers have acquired the taste of CNG-powered vehicles. So, if you are also among the private buyers who want mileage as well as features, below are a few vehicles that you can consider:
1) Tata Tiago: This
indigenous hatchback is among the most popular vehicles in India offered by the
Indian carmaker Tata Motors. The Tiago is only available with a 1.2-litre
petrol engine that produces 84bhp and 113Nm of torque and sends power to the
front wheels via a standard five-speed manual gearbox. There is an automated
manual transmission (AMT) as well. In addition, there is a factory-fitted CNG
kit with a lower state of tune of 71bhp and 95Nm of torque. It is only
available with a five-speed manual transmission. The Tata Tiago's CNG mileage
is 26.49km/kg, as claimed by ARAI. In addition, it is also feature-rich, unlike
other CNG cars in India.
Its price starts at Rs 5.40 lakh, ex-showroom, New Delhi.
2) Tata Tigor: The Tigor is a
stretched version of the Tiago. It shares the same platform as its
small-in-size sibling. Moreover, they also share the same engine with the same
transmission options. Despite being a stretched version of the Tiago, the Tata
Tigor's CNG mileage is the same as its hatchback version at 26.49km/kg. Its
ex-showroom price starts at Rs 6.00 lakh in New Delhi.
3) Maruti Suzuki Dzire: This
sub-four-meter sedan is a taxi operator's first preference in the CNG segment.
The car with spacious interiors and a comfortable ride at an affordable price
make the subcompact sedan slot itself among the best CNG cars in India.
As for specifications, the 1.2-litre petrol plus CNG generates a power of 70bhp
and 95Nm of torque. And it is only available with a five-speed manual
transmission. With that engine, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire has an ARAI-claimed
mileage of 26.55km/kg. Please note that the CNG-spec of the Dzire has a badging
of Maruti Suzuki Dzire Tour that gets the old design. The
old-design Dzire has a starting ex-showroom price of Rs 6.04 lakh in New Delhi.
These are the top three CNG-powered vehicles that are
bestsellers in the country. Moreover, it is also worth mentioning that the
infrastructure of CNG pumps isn't at the scale of what it is supposed to be. If
you are driving within an urban city, then it's okay.
Keeping that aside, there are several CNG-powered vehicles
offered by three companies as of now: Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Hyundai
India. You can find a curated list on the autoX website by searching for
